Jn-00609-2003.r1 1 a Functional Connection between Inferior Frontal Gyrus and Orofacial Motor Cortex in Human
نویسندگان
چکیده
The inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) of humans is known to play a critical role in speech production. The IFG is a highly convoluted and cytoarchitectonically diverse structure, classically forming three sub-gyri. It is reasonable to speculate that during speaking the IFG, or some portion of it, influences via cortico-cortical connections the oro-facial representational area of primary motor cortex. To test the hypothesis that such cortico-cortical connections exist, electrical-stimulation tract tracing experiments were performed intra-operatively on fourteen human subjects undergoing surgical treatment of medically intractable epilepsy. Bipolar electrical stimulation was applied to sites on the IFG, while the resulting evoked potentials were recorded from oro-facial motor cortex, using a multi-channel recording array. Stimulation of the IFG evoked polyphasic waveforms on motor cortex of both languagedominant and non-dominant hemispheres. The evoked waveforms had consistent features across subjects. The responses were seen in discrete regions on precentral cortex. Stimulation of motor cortex also evoked responses on portions of IFG. The data provide evidence for a functional connection between the human IFG and orofacial motor cortex.

متن کاملSpeech networks at rest and in action: interactions between functional brain networks controlling speech production.
Speech production is one of the most complex human behaviors. Although brain activation during speaking has been well investigated, our understanding of interactions between the brain regions and neural networks remains scarce. We combined seed-based interregional correlation analysis with graph theoretical analysis of functional MRI data during the resting state and sentence production in heal...
متن کاملThe Neural Basis of Vocal Pitch Imitation in Humans
Vocal imitation is a phenotype that is unique to humans among all primate species, and so an understanding of its neural basis is critical in explaining the emergence of both speech and song in human evolution. Two principal neural models of vocal imitation have emerged from a consideration of nonhuman animals. One hypothesis suggests that putative mirror neurons in the inferior frontal gyrus p...
متن کاملA Functional MRI Study of the Verbal Transformation Effect
In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to localise the brain areas involved in a specific auditory-verbal imagery task, the Verbal Transformation Effect (VTE). Two conditions were contrasted: a baseline condition involving simple mental repetition of monosyllables and a first name vs. a VTE condition involving mental repetition of the same items with active s...
متن کاملfMRI investigation of unexpected somatosensory feedback perturbation during speech
Somatosensory feedback plays a critical role in the coordination of articulator movements for speech production. In response to unexpected resistance to lip or jaw movements during speech, fluent speakers can use the difference between the somatosensory expectations of a speech sound and the actual somatosensory feedback to adjust the trajectories of functionally relevant but unimpeded articula...
